“I yearned for that simple life—that sustainable life my dad always wanted to create for us.”

I was born and raised in Southern California. We grew up around a myriad of animals, including two Arabian horses, Abby and Melody. My grandparents raised chickens, and their honest roots-inspired my own father to farm and teach us how to be sustainable.

It wasn’t just my father who taught us how to live off the land, my mother is a fantastic gardener and incredible cook, and we often ate “seed to table.”

I eventually left our little farm and headed to college to study pre-med. I wanted to be a heart surgeon, but the shake in my hand kept me from it. I changed my major to nursing, hated it, and dropped out. I found myself in Washington, where I got married, finished college, got a job, and decided to start farming in my free time.

I started with the staples in my little garden: herbs, lettuce, potatoes, garlic, and tomatoes. I even added six fluffy baby chicks I bought from the feed store—identical Rhode Island Reds named Uno, Dos, Tres, Quatro, Cinco, and Seis.

A few years down the road, I was now divorced and raising a little boy, yet I yearned for that simple farm life—that sustainable life my dad always wanted to create for us.

Ryan, my fiancé, came into our lives and has been an incredible stepdad to my son. He was raised in the city with his own menagerie of animals—dogs, cats, and even hedgehogs. He, too, grew up with a mother who is an incredible gardener and passed that love on to him. Ryan’s great-grandparents had a 300-acre farm in Montana, but the town petitioned to have a local market, chapel, and schoolhouse built on the property. We’ve never had the chance to visit the property but have many beautiful treasures from the farm.

Ryan and I decided to move to the country. We started breeding chickens, particularly for beautiful hatching eggs. We’ve built raised garden beds and grow as much of our food as we can. We love to bake from scratch and enjoy a simple, wholesome, “seed to table” lifestyle of our own. Each year, we grow more and more sustainable, and we love learning and sharing our journey with you.
